I run a small online store selling home accessories, and our sales have been steadily increasing over the past few months. The problem is that we’re not seeing much of that growth in our actual profit. Between shipping, advertising, payment fees, software subscriptions, and the time spent processing orders, it feels like every extra sale brings another expense with it. I’ve thought about cutting our advertising budget or switching to cheaper shipping, but I’m worried that could hurt sales or lead to more customer complaints. I’m starting to think we need to look at how the whole business operates rather than just cut a few obvious expenses. How do other store owners figure out where they’re losing money? What changes have helped you reduce operating costs without making the customer experience worse?

Revenue can be a bit deceptive when some products are doing plenty of volume but barely leaving anything behind. Start looking at contribution margin by product, not just the selling price, and include packaging, payment fees, shipping subsidies, returns, and the ad cost tied to that item. You may find that a few popular products are keeping everyone busy while making very little money. That’s usually a better place to start than chopping the marketing budget across the board.

Small recurring costs are easy to ignore because none of them looks serious on its own, but twenty of them sitting across fulfillment, software, inventory, and support can take a big bite out of the month. Before changing anything customers actually notice, go through the ecommerce cost optimization points here https://easync.io/articles/ecommerce-cost-optimization/ . The article breaks the problem into areas you can review separately, which makes it easier to see where the money is leaking out. Then you can cut or streamline the parts that aren’t pulling their weight while leaving the parts customers care about alone.
